Yesterday I received a request to make a similair painting to my Winter Dreaming, but smaller. Last week I received a request for a copy of the same painting, but with 4 friends sitting on the beach looking out at sea..........along with 3 additional copies, one for each friend of the buyer. This large empty canvas had been sitting in my "studio" for what seems like years, on an antique easel that had once belonged to my grandfather. Well, no more taunting me Mr. Giant Canvas. Well, due to being busy all weekend with running to kids' lacrosse, kids' soccer, visiting with family, going to a Kentucky Derby party, picking out new plants for the local deer to eat out of our yard, etc.... I couldn't attend an opening on Friday for a local juried art exhibit, that was run in conjunction with the Gardening Club. It was pretty interesting, pieces that received an award were paired with a floral design that was inspired by the work. I was able to stop in today and was pleased to see that my painting, Morning Glow, a painting that I had completed in a Deborah Paris workshop, was given the First Place ribbon for all entered oils or acrylics.

In Vinalhaven, Maine there's a stone eagle statue right downtown that was originally believed to be carved on the island at the turn of the century during the island's quarrying heyday, only problem is the stone isn't native to the island. Well, it's still pretty amazing....

In my quest to become a better landscape painter I've started a new virtual workshop, Drawing & Painting Trees, with landscape painter Deborah Paris. She's a wonderful teacher and firmly believes that in order to paint the landscape one needs to understand the characteristics of the natural world around you, and the best way to do that is to get out your sketch book and get to work. Apparently, this practice was quite common for some landscape painters in the early years to create loads of sketches during the summer months, thus providing source material for painting during the winter months.

First pass on glazing underpainting

Here's my first pass on glazing one of my underpaintings. In this process, it's important to have a mood that you're aiming for. I'm not sure if this is the mood or feel I'm shooting for, as long as it doesn't come across as cranky and frustrated I'll be happy.

To answer Holly's question, oiling out is the process of adding a thin layer of drying oil or medium to the surface of your painting to bring any matte surfaces back to their true color and value. The operative word, as I found out the hard way, is THIN! I applied approximately a bucket's worth and couldn't figure out why it wasn't dry days later...duh!

I've been busy reading and sketching for a virtual workshop that I'm taking with tonalist painter Deborah Paris. This is an entirely different process than the direct, alla prima method I'm used to. Tonalism involves using lots of glazing, using similar values and if all goes well, arriving with a sublime end result. Deborah's starting advice is to create many thumbnail sketches of your subject in order to arrive with a composition that works, because if it doesn't work small it will never work large, good advice! Time to sharpen up the pencils and crank out some more sketches....

A few years ago, before I took my first painting class, I decided to take a drawing class to sharpen up those skills before ever laying paint to canvas, and this little produce ink drawing is one of the first from that class.

I tried to keep this fall landscape quick and loose, almost abstract. I think I've been getting too "blendy" with my strokes and have gotten away from this natural looseness that I used to have.

Something to look forward to for me, I just signed up for a virtual workshop with Deborah Paris, a tonalist landscape painter, her work just makes me crazy, but in a good way.

I like the contrast of this rusty, old dumptruck parked in the tall grass on the side of a dirt road set against all the beautiful greens and the bright blue sky. I'm tempted to do this in a much larger and wider format.

I've noticed that as the Black Eyed Susans hit their peak, it's almost back to school time, woohoo! Don't get me wrong, I love my kids, but after all of us being together 24/7 all summer I think it's time for us to see other people.
