Getting ready for July show

I'm in the process of working on mulitple paintings, getting geared up for a show in early July. This is a first pass on a still life. I find that taking a photo helps me see where I need to go a little further with a painting

Sunflowers

12" x 9", oil on 3/4" stretched canvas

Sold

I use mostly a square format in my paintings, although sometimes it's nice, and more fitting really, to use a traditional rectangular canvas to make for a better compostion.

Work in progress....

18"x18", oil on stretched canvas

Here's a first pass on a table top still life. I've still got a bit of work to do on the fabric, the apples, the flowers....everything really.

Keeping it Simple

Today I'm off to bring my daughter and a few of her friends to an amusement park, as part of her birthday present, so I'm posting a prior painting since there's not much time to paint today.

Quick Bloom

4"x4"
oil on canvas
$50
Thought I'd try a quick floral portrait this morning before heading out to the beach for the day with the kids. Sunscreen, cooler, umbrella, boogie boards, ipod, cell phone, towels, blanket....what else am I forgetting?

The Three of Us

8" x 8", oil on canvas

A little bit of glare on this one... I limited myself to 1 hour so that I would force myself to make quick decisions and not get bogged down pushing the paint around and around.

Black Eyed Susans

Back to School

4" x 4", oil on canvas

SOLD

I've noticed that as the Black Eyed Susans hit their peak, it's almost back to school time, woohoo! Don't get me wrong, I love my kids, but after all of us being together 24/7 all summer I think it's time for us to see other people.

It's been a while since my last post so I thought I'd keep it simple for today's painting.

Azalea Bloom

6" x 6", oil on stretched canvas

$125 framed

Our house backs up to a state park which means that there is an endless parade of wildlife going through our yard. Great for the kids and the cats viewing pleasure, not so great for the plants. I found this azalea bloom hiding underneath the shrub seeking refuge, pretty ironic that I saved it by snipping it off.

Overboard
10" x 10", oil on canvas
Sold

I'm back from a week's vacation in sunny Florida with the family. I brought some art supplies with me, as well as my best intentions, but I ended up never lifting a paint brush. It feels good to be back in the saddle again.

"That's a hell of an ambition, to be mellow. It's like wanting to be senile." Randy Newman

Mellow Yellow

6" x 6", oil on stretched canvas

SOLD

For today's still life I tried to limit myself to a simple palette, using mostly yellows with subtle hints of green and blush. This is much lighter than I normally go in my paintings.

First Bloom
8" x 8", oil on stretched canvas

On exhibit at Danforth Art Museum School small works exhibit

I thought I'd try to do a quick, simple floral still life today. I'm pretty happy with it, however I wish I put my brush down a half hour earlier. I'm slowly learning to paint faster and smarter.

Looking Up

Looking Up

6" x 6", oil on stretched canvas

Sold

Here's a little still life for today. I set this up by placing the flowers in a glass jar on the floor and painting while standing over it. With two chaotic kids and two curious cats in the house, I had to complete this quickly before it would get knocked over.
